Student from the HRGJ Clinic at CUNY Law School meets then-ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda

Many of the gender persecution acts included in the Observatory’s case summaries were documented by the HRGJ Clinic and local partners, in collaboration with MADRE, and have been formally shared with regional and international accountability mechanisms, including: the ICC, IIIM, JEP and UNITAD. We have also shared with domestic accountability mechanisms that requested our information, including: Belgium’s federal prosecutors investigating war crimes committed in Syria; Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) War Crimes Unit; France’s War Crimes Unit Prosecution Office and Investigative Judges Office; Germany’s War Crimes Unit Prosecution Office; The Netherlands’ War Crimes Unit Police Investigation Team;  Sweden’s War Crimes Unit Prosecution Office and Police War Crimes Team; and the United Kingdom’s War Crimes Police Team (SO15).

Below are examples of gender persecution acts or conduct charged or discussed in accountability mechanisms. Also included are discussions from accountability and monitoring mechanisms that provided building blocks for understanding gender persecution under international law, as well as historical records demonstrating how perpetrators used crimes to punish those they perceive as transgressing their imposed gender roles, behaviors, activities or attributes.
